Last year Ed Bono (Leo Burnett) and I won the NYC Midnight Movie Madness regional competition with Supermandilon. I totally forgot we said we were going to do it again this year. So when Ed called me last month and said the theme was bad habits and the genre was musical, I found myself paralyzed. Musical? What? Are they kidding? It's hard enough to tell a story with moving images let alone also composing music. But Ed said it wouldn't be a problem. His friend Carlo at Razorhead Music in New York would take care of it.

Uh, ok.

So we had two weeks to create this musical, but Ed and I were on busy schedules the first week. We had nothing going into the weekend. And I had to go out of town. Before I left, I suggested we play with the word 'habit' and write something around a nun. Ed liked that idea a lot. So in Des Moines I wrote out the story and lyrics for "Kate". Ed thought it was great and on Monday we e-mailed the script to Carlo in New York. He said he would give us a track by Wednesday night.

Uh, ok.

Wednesday night Ed and I were sent a link on the net to the music created by Razorhead. They nailed it. I still can't believe what they were able to do in three days.

I left a message for Carlo: Dude, you made a big pair of shoes.

So Wednesday night Ed made cds for the actors so they could learn their lines. Thursday morning I picked up Bruce Rindler (SolDesignFX) and met Ed and Elisa Cantero (Leo Burnett) down at North Beach. Then we shot the jogger scene with Bruce and Elisa lip synching to a boom box. (Ed shot it with his new Panasonic DVX 24p mini DV camera.) Thursday night we shot the jail and opening scene. Friday morning we shot the lemonade scene and then that afternoon we shot the confessional scene. Carlos Lowenstein, another editor at cutters, helped choreograph the dance number in the church. Friday night I cut it all together and when Ed came over to see it he howled. I made some cassettes and Ed sent the movie off on Saturday to make the deadline.

Huh? Ok!

would have said it was impossible to make a musical in less than a week. In fact, I’m sure I did.

This past Sunday night at midnight, we learned we won our regional competition. So early October, Ed, Bruce, Elisa and I head to New York to compete against all the other regional winners.
